FITCHBURG — About a dozen people held signs Wednesday night at the corner of Electric and South streets, protesting a plan by UMass Memorial Health to close its maternity unit in nearby Leominster on Sept. 23. Massachusetts health officials are calling the health system's plan for closing the maternity ward inadequate. Last week, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health pressed UMass Memorial HealthAlliance - Clinton Hospital to provide a more detailed plan and consider delaying the closure beyond Sept.
