LOWELL — Despite the higher-than-expected election turnout across Massachusetts this year at 51.4%, Lowell saw the third-lowest turnout in the commonwealth at just 29.7%. The Mill City was ahead of only Springfield and Lawrence, which saw 24.9% and 22.8% turnout, respectively. In North Central Massachusetts, Fitchburg fared a bit better at just under 40%. In stark comparison, many smaller communities from Greater Fitchburg to Greater Lowell saw upwards of 60%. Some communities, such as Littleton and Harvard in the Nashoba Valley, saw nearly 70% turnout.
