As Monday's editorial indicated, luckily for the town of Ayer, the rail cars involved in last week's train derailment in that town carried only trash and recycling, which authorities said posed no threat to area residents. Unfortunately, an entirely different fate befell East Palestine, Ohio, the site of last month's catastrophic derailment of a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals, which spewed a toxic cloud that contaminated the air and soil. While that incident received national attention, not many derailments do, unless there's loss of life or the spilling of toxic materials.
